My house is right in the middle of the street and this unfortunately makes the area a no man's land or more precisely no dog's land. The left side of the street is ruled by a couple of dogs and the right side is ruled by more than a couple of dogs. Given this unbalance, one would expect the left side to be run over by the right side rulers. But this has hardly happened because the right side has a fish shop and a Kerala mess and the left side has a lot of dog lovers. There is enough sea food on the right side and enough home food on the left side and all is peaceful.
But there is one more factor which also ensures that peace is kept in the street. On the house right opposite mine is another dog and being a house dog, one would expect it to be outside of street politics (to put it more mildly). But it does have an influence (or atleast it looks like).
The opposite house has stairs to the first floor in the front and next to the stairs is a small perch. The dog sits on it and from that location it can view the full street. Through it's soft but stern eyes, it keeps a watch on the proceedings and ensures that the dog-folk below keep their peace. Any attempt to cross the line is met with a loud bark and the culprits silently run back to their own territories. The mighty dog sits on it's perch and keeps a stern watch and everything is fine in the street below.
